FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this shoe right for me?
The Optaspeed BowTech is designed for ambitious runners who want speed and control in one intelligent system. It performs best during structured training sessions including tempo runs, progression runs, interval sessions, and longer steady efforts where propulsion, alignment, and repeatability need to work together.
WHAT KIND OF RUNS IS THE OPTASPEED BUILT FOR?
From controlled tempo runs to long, steady efforts under fatigue, the Optaspeed BowTech supports structured training where pace and precision are vital.
IS THE OPTASPEED BOWTECH A RACING SHOE?
Primarily a performance trainer, Optaspeed BowTech transitions confidently to race day—especially for runners who want control at higher speeds.
WHAT RUNNING STYLE IS THE SHOE BEST FOR?
The Optaspeed BowTech performs best for heel and midfoot runners, allowing the BowTech system and dual-density midsole to work optimally for propulsion, stability, and controlled transitions.
WHAT SURFACE IS THE OPTASPEED DESIGNED FOR?
The Optaspeed is designed primarily for road running, including pavement, track, and paved paths. It can also handle light gravel or smooth dirt paths, but it is not intended for technical trails or off-road terrain.
HOW LONG DOES THE SHOE LAST?
The BowTech system has been tested for durability beyond 620 miles, while the road-ready rubber outsole is built to last up to 500 miles.
BOWTECH TECHNOLOGY
IS BOWTECH A PLATE?
The patented BowTech kinetic technology uses dual plates to store energy during impact and forefoot load, releasing it explosively at push-off, driving you forward while guiding every stride along a centered, controlled forward momentum.
WHAT SETS BOWTECH APART?
BowTech works with your foot’s natural load and release instead of forcing a rigid ride. Its dual-plate design helps deliver responsive energy return, guided stability, and a centered stride from impact to push-off.
WHY DOES BOWTECH USE TWO PLATES INSTEAD OF ONE?
The dual-plate system allows BowTech to deliver propulsion and guided stability from the same system. By working with the foot’s natural load and release, it stores and releases energy efficiently while helping guide forces along a centered line of progression.
HOW IS BOWTECH DIFFERENT FROM A TRADITIONAL CARBON PLATE?
Unlike traditional carbon-plated shoes that rely on extreme stiffness, BowTech works with the foot’s natural windlass mechanism to deliver propulsion together with guided stability. This creates a more controlled, stable ride experience across a broader range of training paces, especially as fatigue builds.
HOW DOES THE MIDSOLE HELP?
The Optaspeed combines Supercritical N+Foam in the forefoot with EVA cushioning in the heel to create a balance of explosive propulsion, guided stability, and lasting comfort. The dual-density setup helps improve running form while reducing harsh impact over long distances.
DOES THE SHOE OFFER ARCH SUPPORT?
Yes. BowTech engages the foot’s natural windlass mechanism, tightening the arch at toe-off and supporting a centered, controlled line of progression throughout the stride.
FIT & HELPFUL TIPS
SIZE & FIT
The CEP Optaspeed fits true to running shoe size. We recommend ordering a half size up from your everyday casual shoe size.
LACING FOR A LOCKED-IN FIT
If you experience minor heel slippage, try using a runner’s knot (also called marathon or race-lock lacing) for a more secure heel fit without added pressure:
- Lace normally until the second-to-last eyelet
- Thread each lace into the top eyelet on the same side to create loops
- Cross each lace through the opposite loop
- Pull snug and tie as usual
FIT OPTIMIZATION
The Optaspeed is built for a precise, performance fit and works best with lightweight, moisture-wicking running socks. Pair with any CEP Run Sock to maximize comfort and complete the CEP system.
RACE ELIGIBILITY & COMPLIANCE
Yes. The CEP Optaspeed BowTech can be worn by recreational runners in major city marathons, as long as they are not competing for official records, rankings, or prize money. It has not been submitted for World Athletics approval, and event organizers may set their own equipment rules.

New Favorite Training Shoe!
"I spent the last few weeks putting about 30 miles on the CEP Optaspeed BowTech and I’ve been really impressed with them! I typically run around 10–25 miles per week, with a mix of progression runs, tempo runs, track workouts, and longer runs. I’m also beginning to train for an Ironman 70. 3 and the Phoenix HYROX in 2027, so I’ve been looking for a shoe that can work for both longer endurance runs and faster-paced sprint workouts. One of the first things I noticed with the Optaspeed was the cushioning. I’ve run in Hoka shoes quite a bit, and I can definitively say the cushioning in the Optaspeed is significantly better. I did a 9-mile run in these and was really impressed with how comfortable my feet felt afterward. The shoes are very cushioned without feeling bulky or heavy, which I really liked. They also breathe really well, which is great on my longer runs because I usually end up running mid-day during the summer. The BowTech dual-plate system was probably my favorite feature. You can actually feel the shoe helping push you forward, especially when you start picking up the pace. I did a 4-mile progression run where I gradually increased my speed and finished the last mile at a much faster, almost sprint pace. The propulsion was really noticeable during that last mile, but the shoes still felt stable and supportive underneath me. They didn’t have that overly stiff or awkward feeling that I’ve experienced with some plated shoes. They also felt really supportive throughout my runs. I occasionally deal with some arch discomfort after longer runs, but I didn’t experience that with these shoes. Even after the 9-mile run, my feet felt great. The combination of cushioning and support made them feel like a shoe I could comfortably use for longer training runs while still having enough responsiveness to use for speed work or racing. As far as fit, I would recommend sizing up about a half size. I normally wear a size 9 in Hoka, but I think a 9. 5 would be a better fit for me in the Optaspeed. Once laced up, I never had issues with foot or heel slippage and my feet felt secure throughout my runs. Overall, I think the Optaspeed BowTech is a really good option for someone who wants a shoe that can do a little bit of everything! It has enough cushioning and comfort for longer runs, but the propulsion and responsiveness make it equally suitable when you want to pick up the pace. I'm excited to use these for training, especially as I start increasing my running volume for my Ironman 70. 3. Highly highly recommend the Optaspeed BowTech! These shoes are the first running shoes I’ve owned that get me excited to go out for each run. *I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review."
Optaspeed Wear Test
"The fit is definitely on the narrow-to-standard side, as advertised, but I found the shoe to run a little short. During my runs, I noticed quite a bit of rubbing around the back of my heel, which became uncomfortable and made it difficult for me to fully enjoy the shoe. One thing I did appreciate was how lightweight the Optaspeed felt. The low weight made me feel fast and unrestricted. However, despite being lightweight, I didn't get the smooth, natural transition I was hoping for, and the shoe felt somewhat clunky to me while running. Overall, the Optaspeed has some appealing qualities, particularly its lightweight construction and streamlined fit. However, based on my experience, the fit and ride didn't work particularly well for me. I think trying the shoe on before purchasing would be a good idea, especially for runners who are sensitive to heel fit or prefer a little extra room in the toe box. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review."
Good shoe for a pro
"While I believe these are a great shoe, I don’t think my foot is the right fit for the shoe. They had a lot of pop Because of the plate in them, and I felt fast. But I found myself losing balance a lot. I did appreciate how much cushion was on them and the socks were very nice for compression. I think if you enjoy a lot of power and elevation, these are a good pair of shoes for you to look into. I could feel the bounce back in my heels and I appreciated that a lot. Again, it’s a lot of shoe so get ready to work with it! The socks again are a great combo and I love how they matched. If you’re looking for a race day shoe, make sure to break these puppies in. I also felt they ran a little small… I would maybe size up a half size."
CEP Otaspeed Bow Tech may make the cut as my next marathon shoe
"I consider myself somewhat of a veteran runner having completed over 25 marathons during my running career. I am also an outfitter at a prominent run specialty store so I have tried and tested many shoes. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review. I can say I was honestly surprised how much I enjoyed running in this shoe. I am normally between a size 8 and 8. 5 and felt the 8. 5 fit well with the CEP compression socks I received to wear test. I definitely would have been cramped in the size 8. Compared to my usual running shoes I would say they fit snugly (needed the shoe horn to put them on) but could also be due to the thicker socks. Currently I am training for a fall marathon running between 30-40 miles weekly. To test out the shoes I wore them on three types of runs-easy,tempo and long. I enjoyed them equally for all runs but feel like they are best suited for longer runs as they feel a bit heavy (as compared to other “racing” shoes). The cushion in the heel feels amazing. It is soft yet responsive and cupped my heels. Runners who are looking for a stable responsive shoe would benefit from the CEP otaspeed. During one of my last marathons as I began to fatigue I had difficulty running tangents due to the overly soft foam in my shoes. With the CEP shoe and sock I am confident i could continue to push through the miles. With my race coming up soon I may choose to pick the CEP for race day. At the very least I am excited to continue training in it and have already recommended it to a few fellow runners."
New everyday training shoe?
"I honestly really enjoyed these shoes as an every day training shoe. They weren’t the best shoe I’ve ever felt—I tend to like a more high cushioned shoe and this felt like more of a mid-high cushion. I struggle to find shoes that don’t leave my feet hurting and make me want to convert them to just a walking shoe, or a gift to someone else. I think beginners and experts alike could find success with these. I used them for a 5k workout along with just everyday easy runs and they did well! I got loads of compliments from teens and adults alike. Definitely a cool talking point and cool to introduce people to a new brand! I can’t wait to keep these in my rotation!"
Great Tempo Shoe!
"Theses shoes are very lightweight and bouncy! They make you feel really fast and give you a boost. I personally incorporated them into my marathon training as a tempo shoe and they’re great! They are very supportive and comfortable as well and all around a really good shoe. I enjoy them along witn the compression socks! I didn’t have any issues with comfort or foot pain when I wore them, even with them being so new. I am going to continue wearing these shoes in my training and would like to potentially race in them! The only thing I struggled with is the laces untieing sometimes, however, it’s easy to fix with a double knot! Overall a great shoe that I would recommend to runners especially those focused on speed. I received these shoes for free in return for an honest review."
Good trainer for short or long runs
"It was responsive with a good amount of cushion. I struggled to feel the quick turnover as other shoes when it came to quicker speed workouts or tempo runs. Things I noticed that I liked and wasn’t sure: The shoe felt stable when running with how much cushion was under the shoe. This is a plus and a thing that always scares some people with buying a high cushioned shoe. This shoes did it well I am a true 9 for majority of all shoe brands but felt this shoe was a bit tight. Maybe running a half size smaller than some other major brands. Upper hugged the foot well but super breathable and light, so a huge plus. Huge fan of the heel cup and felt it just held my foot very well in place without having to over lace it."
Neat!!
"I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you CEP!! Energy return/responsiveness: 9/10, it was crazy how springy it felt and I liked the Bow Tech in addition to the foam Comfort: 7/10 a bit narrow in the forefoot. My feet run on the wider side so I'd use these for short distance interval runs and sprints Looks: 8/10 not sure how I feel still about the see-thru mesh but I've gotten mixed reception from others, some think it's neat and others think it's wild ha. I love the safety vest yellow color though it is something I'd go for out in the wild Typical weekly mileage: 10-20mi so I've definitely put these to the test and they have broken in a bit since."
CEP Running Optaspeed
"As both a dedicated runner and a Sales Associate at a running specialty store, I always enjoy testing footwear that brings something genuinely different to the market. The Optaspeed certainly stands out in that regard with its one-of-a-kind, funky aesthetic and uniquely responsive ride. For the past year, I typically run approximately 50 miles per week and tested the Optaspeed over 30 miles across a variety of workouts, including easy runs on both the road and track, marathon pace mile efforts, moderate-paced road runs, and interval sessions. This gave me a good opportunity to experience the shoe across different paces and training environments. In terms of fit, I am usually between a women's 7. 5 and 8 in running shoes and chose a size 8 in the Optaspeed. The fit felt true-to-size overall, though for me, there was a tiny bit of heel slippage. I had approximately a full thumb's width of space in front of my toes, while the upper felt noticeably snug and secure, creating a locked-in sensation without being uncomfortable. I did use a heel lock tie to account for the extra space in the front, and the laces were too short to do this very easily. I will say that after my hardest workout in the shoes, I noticed small blisters on the outside of both of my big toenails, so I will have to figure out how to resolve for this (different tying convention, socks, etc. ) or perhaps it is part of the breaking in period. I also got a few tiny pebbles lodged in the front of the shoe after some fast running, so something tells me they are a little roomy (which is curious as most other reviews say that they run half a size too small). The shoe was comfortable throughout testing and provided a stable platform underfoot. I especially appreciated the heel comfort, which remained consistent during both shorter and longer runs. The rearfoot impact absorption was great. While I found the shoe comfortable enough for daily training, I probably would not choose it for my longest marathon training runs because it tends to slap fairly loudly against the pavement, and it was more comfortable on faster runs than on easy runs. The standout feature of the Optaspeed is its responsiveness. The BowTech technology provides a very lively feel underfoot and creates a noticeably explosive toe-off. The shoe feels eager to move forward, and I found it particularly enjoyable during marathon pace efforts and intervals where the responsive ride could shine, and I was easily able to hit my paces. The overall ride is energetic, with quick transitions from landing to toe-off. The combination of a stable platform and responsive forefoot gives the shoe a unique feel that sets it apart from other super trainers. It feels designed to encourage efficient forward motion while maintaining enough stability for a range of workout types. I will say that this stability could be challenged on tight corners, as I did not feel it was perfectly agile in those moments. I believe the Optaspeed would benefit runners who enjoy a snappy, propulsive ride and are looking for a versatile training shoe for uptempo workouts, marathon pace efforts, and moderate daily mileage. Runners who appreciate innovative designs and want something different from the typical running shoe experience will likely find it especially appealing. A few additional notes: I found that the shoe paired exceptionally well with CEP running socks, which enhanced the overall comfort and secure feel of the fit. I love these socks and the way they do not slide down at all + overall comfort. Also, I am a midfoot/heel striker, and I found these shoes to be very accommodating to that. Disclosure: I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review."
